I think the reason a lot of democrats don’t want to focus on up vs down is because if they focus on left and right they already look good. Up vs. Down would mean examining access to things and privilege.

When I was a kid all I wanted was to be a performer. My senior year, I got nominated for an award for my role as the lead in our high school play. I didn’t win, but I still got to attend a summer conservatory through a local equity theater—for free. That was a big deal.

To be able to pay your bills, eat, rest, get healthcare, and still be able to save is now considered “rich” in the United States.

I just barely got into a place of understanding all this, but wtf, I’m already sick of it. Ffs can people, all people, just live their lives without a regular insidious encounter with “enough”? Enough is an absurd question. Who asks that of anything?

I am now experiencing a level of internal safety where things can just be. Hobbies are not an escape from hard things, but just hobbies. Connections are not to get something I didn’t get from family or lovers, they can just be because we like each other. No living as revenge, but living for myself.

Painfully relevant.

I think the work of the middle class (especially upper middle class) is to find creative ways to give back access. We have the time, the resources, the energy. We are still apart of the working class, we still care about access in a system where the rich are eating people. And we buy the most.

This is something I am constantly unpacking right now as we watch people struggle more and more. It isn’t about the opportunities but the opportunities for opportunity. Access to opportunity. Low cost healthcare, college, and living are essential to upward mobility.

My son has a friend and they like to stop by while they are biking and knock at random times and ask to play. My autistic side is very overwhelmed. But I asked to set up plans for play dates instead. They said ok they won’t knock anymore. And I thanked them for understanding. That was hard to do!

Both my husband and me come from families that could not afford college. We both went via scholarship, loans, and working to pay the rest. My husband got full scholarship to Boston U. I got some scholarship and loans after a year at community college. I worked during the year and the summers.
