Holm oak forests (Quercus ilex) cover around 2.79 million hectares in Spain, making them one of the most widespread forest types in the country. Incredibly resilient, this species thrives under summer drought, wide temperature fluctuations, and a broad range of soils.

Beech forests (Fagus sylvatica) cover 387,776 ha in Spain. The country includes 18 provenance regions for this species. These forests in the Iberian Peninsula represent the southwesternmost populations of beech in Europe, making them ecologically and biogeographically unique.

As a forest researcher, I very often (far too often) encounter questions such as: What does a forest researcher do in Spain? Do you even have forests there? The international image of Spain as a mostly desert-like country, and mainly associated with sun and beach,has contributed to this stereotype.

Excited to join the COST Action @micropbiomes.bsky.social on plant–microbiome networks and synthetic communities to improve crop fitness. Although my background is in Forestry, I’m looking forward to learning from the agricultural perspective and contributing to this interdisciplinary exchange.
