I always thought treating an ending as "happy" "tragic" or "ambiguous" is extremely reductive bc endings are actually extremely bespoke to what the story wants you to walk away thinking and feeling or even hoping to have changed you in some way. Yet it's normal to treat endings as window dressing.

the difference between a solid ending and a bad one can be the difference someone who remembers your story or forgets it. personally I can have a bad time for 90% of a story but if you nail the ending that retroactively makes everything I just experienced a divine revelation and it becomes legend

it's actually wild to me a lot of creators treat that saying "the difference between a happy or sad ending is where you stop the story", like the ending is an arbitrary end point to be done with it. NO? just. No!!!! The ending is the ENTIRE POINT to convincing someone why your story should MATTER

once you understand the nature of ambiguous endings, you'll never skip out on how important critically engaging with one is again. ambiguous endings explicitly deny you logical satisfaction so you're FORCED to have to examine the story on an allegorical level, not literal, to recognize the thesis

a downer ending needs to be earned as much as a happy one. A lot of creators don't recognize how to make a good ending bc the ending is effectively your story's thesis bolded, underlined and highlighted - but it's common to feel like it's smothering to have to think about themes and not go on vibes
