Several months ago I ordered @themountaingoats.bsky.social new book as a surprise for my future self! So far the poetry+prose mix has proven to be great read-aloud material. Baby likes following the words on the page, and I'm particularly enjoying the creative punctuation.

Lumping them together as “AI” gives readers the impression that a single class of tool is discerning novel protein structures, teasing subtle patterns out of mountains of LHC data, writing a student’s History 101 paper, and arguing a ketamine-addled billionaire could post up Shaq in his prime. No.

Submitting a paper during paternity leave was such a mistake. Because now I have a (very nice) referee report, zero time to work on it, and guilt from both my professional conscience AND my parenting conscience when I do try to find the time. 🧪

When our 10-week-old baby is hungry, she mimes putting a bottle in her mouth. She's literally inventing her own sign language, it's amazing.

A useful lesson I learned in graduate school: sometimes a “bad” model fit to good data is still useful. Sometimes it will trick you into making baseless claims. Science is knowing how to figure out the difference

Playing the Sound of Music movie for Baby tonight and she's getting rather upset. Might have to return her to the hospital -- this is clearly not my child.

It gives a strange feeling when you spend every waking moment looking at a tiny someone that shares your same exact features. Socially she's kinda boring, and yet my lizard brain is saying "this is clearly the best person there ever was."

A punctuation guide: "He asked for a surprise, so she gave him one[]two punches." Hyphen(-, forming a compound adjective): The surprise was boxing combinations. En-dash(–, indicating a numeric range): The surprise was one or two punches. Em-dash(—, like a colon): The surprise was two punches.

Update on this: baby girl Vrijmoet did successfully join us on the outside! And we are all doing great. Baby is learning SO QUICKLY how to do things -- it's phenomenal to witness.
