Pride Month unfolds, a time to honor the resilience and joy of queer love. My painting shows two Nahua women in El Salvador, making pupusasâa tribute to everyday love. El Salvador holds a special place in my heart. May this month celebrate love in all its forms.

For Mermay, a painting of queer Indigenous love from Guatemala. The Xocomil, a water spirit of Lake AtitlĂĄn, falls for a girl who bathes in its waters. When she disappears, the lake turns stormy with grief. In this version, the Xocomil is a Mayan mermaid. Prints in my Etsyâlink in bio!

Today is 6 Death, a day sacred to the Moonâwho was born on a day Miquiztli. Last night was the full moon. To honor her, I painted myself in white chalk, like Tecciztecatl, the Lord of Snails, who appears in our codices pale, luminous, crowned with shells.

We are Chicano. We are Mexica. We are dancers and children of the maize. Tozoztontliâthe Small Vigilâis the first of the great maize ceremonies. It marks the turning of the seasons. The fields are still dry and golden, but we call for the rains. We begin again.

Drawing a fire-bearer. There are many different roles in ceremony, and one of the most important is the fire bearer. Through their work they call upon Chantico and Huehueteotl, the lords of fire. In their sacred smoke our prayers, intentions, and gratitude are carried to the Teteo.

For no particular reason, please note the following fact: The word "Mexico" was used for two hundred years before the word "America" was ever coined. Mexico comes from a Nahuatl word, the name of a kingdom founded in 1325 by a tribe known as the Mexihtin. "Mexihco." Place of Mexihtli. 1/
