Also helpful for anyone trying to give constructive feedback on projects without being seen as an instigator, a contrarian, emotional, jealous, or other words that come up due to defensiveness. Phrasing is important, especially for those of us who somehow keep putting our foot in our mouth.

Constructive reviews are so important for improving a paper. Rushed reviews that skip over potential issues often result in poorer quality publications, despite the peer review process. Ive been in this situation as author, coauthor & reviewer, wondering whether reviewer 3 even read the paper!

I don’t use social media to argue about politics with strangers. I use social media to talk to people about fish. When I talk about fish on Bluesky, people ask me questions about fish. When I talk about fish on Twitter, people threaten to murder my family because we’re Jewish.

This is excellent: Tips and Tricks for Writing Constructive Peer Reviews Perhaps the most excellent part is this subhead: "Remember that peer review is not meant to crush souls". Right? Peer review should improve papers (and OK, gatekeep a little) - not make an author regret their career choices!

This is really excellent. My core phrasing as a reviewer is to write in a style that leaves open the possibility that you as a reviewer may have missed a point & leave open a third way to clarifying things - because it is likely the authors just need to add more context and explication.

In North America, animals living at the northern limit of their geographic distribution have developed creative adaptations for surviving cold winters. Our latest study, soon to be published in Marine Ecology Progress Series, explores how juvenile oysters have adapted to winters in Atlantic Canada.

During my PhD, I was fortunate to learn from & work with Dr. Thierry Chopin. While Thierry wasn't directly involved with my thesis, he was generous w/ his time & giving advice; we had many lasting conversations about marine biology, climate change, life as a marine scientist, &, of course, seaweeds.

A nice news story from the DFO NCR Communications Team in Ottawa on our paper showing that heatwaves exacerbate the ecological effects of nearshore fishing. "Hot and Bothered: How heatwaves amplify the ecological impacts of nearshore clam fishing" www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/publications...

Oxygen supersaturation has been reported to protect aquatic animals from heat waves. We tested this in a large collaborative experiment on many species of fish and crustaceans. Our new paper in @plosbiology.org shows that the effect of hyperoxia on thermal tolerance is negligible. Unfortunately.
