The bartender passes Octavo the glass, which he quickly pushes towards Skull Kid. "Never understood why everyone around here is obsessed with the stuff," he mutters. At least it's only another minute before the cook brings them their waffles. Nice and hot, with a pitcher of spiced honey to go

"Could I get a drink in the meantime?" Octavo asks the bartender. "We got milk." He makes a face, pursing his lips, then turns to Skull Kid. "...do you want milk, lad?"

Who the hell is this Link kid I keep hearing about?

"Amazing, is it not? Allow me to procure your waffle for you." He leans on the counter, waving the barkeep over. "Would you kindly prepare us two waffles?" The barkeep gives them a puzzled look, probably unused to seeing nonhumans in his bar, but he nods and calls over to the chef.

(( I looked into this a bit and waffles originated in the 14th century so I think it's quite feasible that they could exist in Hyrule.

"Well, of course. Getting up in others' business is a universal constant."

"Then come with me~ We shall quest for the House of Waffle." (it turns out it's just a tavern that sells waffles...)

"Not so fast, lad. Only the pure of heart can reach the House of the Waffle. Do you believe you have what it takes?"

"Ah, the House of Waffle. An ancient and dignified house. It's been a long time..."

Octavo doesn't have a house, but he has a home base, so to speak. He barricades himself inside the Hyrule castle library and lives in there. He just threw a mattress on the floor by the fireplace. However, traveling between points in the timeline is not something he can do freely, so he can't just

"It would be nice to live in such a world. Unfortunately, I must be practical. I travel far too much, anyway. There would be no sense in having a house if it is left empty much of the time."

"It isn't that they don't let me have a house. I don't need permission to have a house! I just don't have one, due to not having the funding or materials or means of assembling one, and even if I did have one it would be burnt to the ground by the ignoble peasantry within a week."

"Never said you did. It's general advice, from my own experience. That's nice, though, that you have a house. I wish 𝘐 had a house."

"This is exactly what I'm saying! It's why I'm warning you not to grovel for their approval, because they'll never see you as one of them. Do good on your own terms."

"Fine, it is more of a magenta." He waves a dismissive hand. "Regardless of how good you are, regular Hylians, those who dwell within the light, will never see you anything other than a monster. That is why you cannot live your life according to their definition of goodness."

"And... spit you up?" He blinks at Thistle a few times. "You look quite uneaten to me."

"You can change your shape, but can you change the fact that you're made of darkness? Your crimson eyes? These are honest questions. I have never met a shade that appeared otherwise, so I am curious."

"Mm. I do wonder, can a shade ever truly be free? They can only exist when summoned, only ever take the shape of another... It's a hauntingly familiar narrative, wishing to defy your fate, the very thing you were made to be. Are you prepared to do whatever it takes?"

"You don't want to fight? That's new. I assure you, I'd have other uses for you if you wanted to join me. I can do my own fighting."

"I know, I am suggesting that I do. You'd just need to be banished first, I assume..."

"If he's so terrifying, you could always allow me to summon you instead!"

"Nonsense. She loves the pit. She's told me herself. Lots of evil to banish down there."

"You'll have to be a tad more specific, lass. I've known quite a few knights that also happened to have friends. I'd wager most knights have friends, unless they're utter miserable bastards."

"Interesting. And if she were unable to reach you, say, due to being unconscious, or trapped in some sort of magical crystal... What then?"

"A couple of..." Octavo stares at Thistle a moment, studying his face closely. He does not appear to have aged, especially for someone in a period of what was typically rapid growth... "You don't recall? We met in an underground city? You threatened my life several times?"

"Absolutely not! You should find a deep pit and throw her in immediately. She yearns to return to the dark."

"You seem a bit out of practice..." Octavo sits to listen to the halting way Thistle plucks the strings. "It's nice to see you above ground, by the way."

"Let me guess... The Knight and the Princess again?" Octavo peers over her shoulder at the book. "I've been around a long time, you know. Perhaps I met them in my youth."

Octavo, passing by behind her, mimics the tune, humming it in perfect imitation of her. "That's quite nice... Did you write that one yourself?"

"Pardon me, but is that not the definition of lost?"

"...sometimes I wonder why I bother. I don't even like these people, and they do not like me. Why should I save them?"

"Hmm. I don't believe you, but you don't seem to want to talk about it."

"Well then, what about her?"
