On 24 September 2005, friend of the George Padmore Institute (GPI) Yusufu Bala Usman sadly passed away. Usman was a Nigerian politician, historian and radical academic whose major work ‘For the Liberation of Nigeria’ was published by New Beacon Books in 1979.

Over the last few months, the George Padmore Institute (GPI) has been developing a resource to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Black Parents Movement (BPM), detailing the organisation’s history, governance, key national and international campaigns. Check it out here: buff.ly/vQszy33 📽️

Pictured is GPI Trustee and renowned reggae poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, captured taking part in one of the demonstrations to support George Lindo, a Jamaican-born worker residing in Bradford, who was falsely accused of the armed robbery of a betting shop in 1978.

On 12 August 1900, sculptor Ronald Moody was born in Kingston, Jamaica. Moody’s work has featured in multiple national galleries including Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery, as well as in his home country in the National Gallery of Jamaica.

📆 On 9 August 1970, 150 people marched to Notting Hill Police Station, London, in protest against the discriminatory policing of a local restaurant. On the day of the protest, as the 150 community members marched to the local police station, they were met with 700 police officers.

Last week, we shared the sad news that Anne Walmsley, dear friend of the George Padmore Institute had passed away. Pictured is Anne awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies. It was an achievement she took great pride in, and so we wish to honour this moment.

Last weekend, the George Padmore Institute (GPI) took part in the Black Lives Matter UK (BLM UK) Festival of Collective Liberation. We would like to thank the team at BLM UK for inviting us and for all their hard work organising the day of events.

Today marks 50 years since the founding of the Black Parents Movement (BPM). The Movement was formed by supplementary school teachers and parents in response to the assault of and false accusations Hornsey police made against a 17-year-old West Indian student named Cliff McDaniel on 17 April 1975.
