Last year we announced sculptor Gary March as our Artist in Residence. During visits to our archive, Gary has researched collections including original placards from the Newton Rose Action Committee defence campaign in the early 1980s. We look forward to bringing you more news soon.

Margaret Busby became the first black female publisher in the UK with Allison & Busby, 1966. A long association with the International Book Fair of Black Radical and Third World Books 1982–95 organised by our co-founder John La Rose saw her give the opening address to the 11th Book Fair in 1993.

This National Poetry Month we share 'It Dread inna Inglan' by GPI Trustee Linton Kwesi Johnson, written as part of a campaign to free George Lindo, a wrongly convicted Jamaican-born man in Bradford in 1978, and which Linton recited on the steps of a police station in Bradford during the campaign.

At the start of the year our co-founder and Trustee Linton Kwesi Johnson was honoured for his work as a reggae poet and lifelong activist. Goldsmiths University named a lecture theatre in his honour with speakers including journalist Gary Younge. More on our website www.georgepadmoreinstitute.org

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we are paying tribute to Sarah White (5 Apr 1941–4 Feb 2022), one of the co-founders of the George Padmore Institute. 30 years prior, along with John La Rose, Sarah established New Beacon Books in Finsbury Park one of the first black bookshops in the UK.

We are saddened to learn of the death of Eric Huntley. An inspirational force in partnership with his wife Jessica, they were at the heart of black radical publishing and bookselling in the 70s/80s. We remember their activism with the International Book Fair and the Bookshop Joint Action Committee
