It's been a wee while ago, but we're predicting more geomagnetic jerks! North Africa, 2028, watch this space.🧭🧲🌍 In our paper - published in @springer.springernature.com Earth Planets and Space - we use periodic signatures of core flow to forecast SV until 2030, and find 2 new jerks! 🔍

We are expecting an increase in geomagnetic activity over the next few days due to increased solar activity. A coronal mass ejection (CME) is expected to arrive this evening making STORM periods likely, potentially peaking at moderate (G3) or strong (G4) levels.

At long last, our paper on modelling geomagnetic jerks is published in its final form📔: doi.org/10.1016/j.pe... Here, we use the @esa.int #Swarm satellites to investigate the Earth’s outer core. We find that geomag. jerks are associated with core-surface pulses, which allows us to predict them!🌏🧲🧭

Was very happy to deliver a workshop on #Outreach and #WideningParticipation at the @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social E4 DTP 2nd year residential last week! Am very grateful for that opportunity, especially as it has only been one year since I completed that training myself!

Super happy to be at the @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social #GeoSciences #Gradschool Forum today! It’s definitely my highlight of the academic year, where the whole postgraduate community gets together from such a diverse set of fields!

The "&c &c" here includes geophysicists. Industry wants 2--3 times as many as UK universities produce ( doi.org/10.1093/astr... ) . I train some of them. I see them go into good, useful jobs. #Edinburgh Uni's Peter Mathieson is using his efficiency drive to kill the geophysics degree off.
