As someone that studies the past I know better than to think artists depict reality. However, I suspect the strong women of the past depicted in "Calling in the Gleaners" (1859) by Jules Breton would take any incel going on about "trad wives" or "women being women" and slap some sense into them.

Someone at Nook Shop in Stoke Newington, North East London sent me this photo of a recently published interview with Monty Don, whose style I admire. I found the interview charming, so I thought I'd share it here. To me, Monty Don is a great example of developing personal style.

Titanic at Southampton on 4 April 1912, six days before her maiden voyage. This photograph was taken on this day 114 years ago. She had arrived from Belfast in the early hours of the morning and is dressed with signal flags to celebrate the first visit to her home port.

I love old paintings of the Countryside, before it was filled with massive lorries plummeting along the narrow lanes with a death-wish. This is, of course, "The Hay Wain" (1821) by John Constable, depicting the Stour between Suffolk and Essex. My parents had a print and said it was the New Forest!

The Gaza area has been on a coastline for hundreds of millions of years, once on the boundary between Pangaea and the Tethys Ocean. The sea-level has risen and fallen, each time a new beach was created. So ancient cemented sands run in ridges parallel to the coast, creating the present landscape.

I have been reading about the history of Gaza lately. Apparently they minted very early coins from the mid-5th century based on the Athenian silver drachm, but with the bearded head of their own deity rather than Athena. Unfortunately the ROM doesn't have one so I stole this image from the internet!

I was recently sent some 17th century Iranian Safavid tile images that are of the type in a book published by Lisa Golombek and I last year. Most of them we had already seen, but one added the poop-deck to our ship!

Trying to pin down this North Elmham pottery at the ROM. This group is mostly Thetford Ware, 3 Ipswich Wares, & 3 St. Neot's ware. The latter has shell (you can see it in this photo). Ipswich ware is supposedly grittier than Thetford Ware. Time to break out the microscope. #MedievalSky #Archaeology

Looking up the precise location of the site producing the Anglo-Saxon pottery I have been asked to look at in the ROM. North Elmham was apparently the seat of a bishopric until 1071, and the excavations were to the southwest of the now ruined cathedral. 🏺 #MedievalSky

For all the people out there waving the Cross of St. George, you should know that St. George of Lydda was a Palestinian, and is widely revered in the Middle East by all faiths.
