Although the 1540s was a time of religious upheaval in England, faith was still important to the crew of the Mary Rose, as many of them carried paternosters. Eight paternosters were found onboard, from simple boxwood rosary beads to more expensive silver and coral beads with intricate designs.

These gold coins were found on the Mary Rose, but they don't contain as much gold as you might think! Instead, they were debased, or mixed with cheaper metals such as silver and copper, so Henry VIII would have more gold to fund his expensive wars.

This tabor pipe, found outside the Carpenter's cabin of the Mary Rose in 1981, is made of knotty boxwood Tabor pipes were played with a Tabor drum by the same musician, which is why there are only three holes, so it can be played with one hand while the other beats out a rhythm.

Portsmouth plays a large part in the story of the Mary Rose - she was built here, she sank defending Portsmouth from invasion in 1545 and, upon her return to the surface in 1982, this was where she made her new home. That's why we're backing Portsmouth’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2029!

While no examples of handwriting survive from the Mary Rose (well, not from the wreck site - there are letters stating they were "Scrybled in the Mary Rose"), but we did find an inkpot with a couple of feather quill tips, suggesting that one of the crew was writing letters home. #HandwritingDay

At least one of the officers on board the Mary Rose owned a pewter chamber pot, presumably because he didn't want to make his way to the heads when nature called. Though looking at the state of it, you have to wonder what he was drinking!

You've heard of ships in bottles, how about bottles in a ship? These small bottles were found in the surgeon's chest. We're not sure what they contained, as the contents leaked on the seabed.

Not Roman, but this Tudor whetstone was found in a little cubbyhole by the door of the carpenter's cabin on the Mary Rose Because of this, we believe it was the one he grabbed on his way out to do work around the ship, should his tools need sharpening on the job. #WhetstoneSolidarity

In 2025 our conservation team removed 1.4kg of dust from the Mary Rose. This is the equivalent of; • half a house brick • 30 golf balls • 200 human eyes • 1500 jelly beans or just over one human brain, if you've been following these over the years. maryrose.org/keeping-thin...

If you're taking part in #Veganuary this year, be grateful that you're not doing it in Tudor England, when even the candles were made of animal products... We found a number of candles on the Mary Rose, made of tallow, or beef fat. Wonder if they worked like scented candles?
