Recently we were talking a lot about the surgeon on the Mary Rose, and how he was a member of the Company of Barbers and Surgeons. The 1542 painting by Hans Holbein the younger, King Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons, is even believed to potentially feature our surgeon!

This wooden bowl is a lot bigger than most of the bowls foundon the Mary Rose - 46cm compared to the usual 26cm! We think it may have been a mess bowl, used to transport food for a group of sailors who work together. #Museum30 #sharing

This group of lanterns was found on the Mary Rose. Unfortunately the horn panels used as window panes haven't survived. These lanterns were very useful below decks, as there was no natural light and you wanted to avoid exposed flames with gunpowder around!

Happy Halloween everyone! While many consider it an American invention, the Jack-o'-Lantern dates back to Ireland in the 1660s; originally turnips and swedes were the medium of choice, but anyone who's tried it knows that the pumpkin is a LOT easier to hollow out!

This is a trepanning drill recovered from the Mary Rose, used to relieve pressure in the skull caused by internal bleeding, by cutting or drilling a hole the patient's head. Trepanning is an ancient surgical procedure, first used in the Stone Age, and still used today to treat bleeding on the brain

#OnThisDay, 17th October 1917, HMS Mary Rose, an M-class destroyer and veteran of the Battle of Jutland, was lost during the battle of Lerwick, sunk by German ships while defending a convoy of merchant vessels.

Urethral syringe? You know where you can stick that... This syringe was one of three recovered from the surgeon’s cabin of the Mary Rose. Of the three it is the only one made of pewter, with a bronze needle and a leather washer on the plunger.

In 1982, divers discovered a large brick structure in the hold, which turned out to be one of the two galley ovens. As visibility on the seabed wasn't great, the only way to get a photo of the whole structure was to take a photomosaic, as seen here.
