Proudly raising a glass, today, to B. W. Matz, whose grave we have had restored in his anniversary year. Matz was the first Hon Gen Sec of the DF, our President from 1920-21, and Hon Editor of our journal, ‘The Dickensian’, from its inception in 1905 until his death in 1925.

Yesterday the world lost one of its greatest Dickens scholars, Professor Michael Slater MBE. He was DF President 1988-1990 and Hon Editor of ‘The Dickensian’ 1958-1977, and wrote the definitive biography of CD. His warmth and wisdom will be sorely missed. RIP Michael.

A huge figure in Dickens Studies, his contribution to the field over the last half century is unsurpassed. @dickensfellowhq.bsky.social has lost a champion.

RT from Ian Dickens, on X: ‘A Christmas Carol’ illustrator John Leech spent 3 months in Bonchurch in 1849. The pretty house he rented is now for sale at £825,000. In one of the bedrooms, Dickens successfully used his mesmerism skills after Leech suffered a head injury while swimming in rough seas.

The next Central DF meeting is at The Charterhouse in London at 6pm on Tuesday 28th October, when Dr Jeremy Parrott will talk on 'David Coppperfield Unbound in 10 objects' - based upon his recently published book.
