In August, in a meeting with the Scottish Gov, Nigel Seaton stated that it was “necessary to be clear with staff what redundancies would likely be needed now.” The University Recovery Plan he drafted stated there would need to be 340 redundancies. Yesterday he told staff there are no plans.

Moving people around for different posts does not save money. Nor does creating 4 new highly-paid posts, where some people will be recruited from lower grades. It’s just moving the cost around on the internal balance sheets. And without growth the University will be forced into a cycle of cuts.

Never forget that our interim Principal wrote a “recovery plan” that called for the loss of 390 more jobs. And that despite that plan be rejected by the SFC, he went to the Scottish Parliament last October to say his plans remain unchanged.

The University of Dundee just announced 21 new senior manager roles at Grade 10 or above. These are designed for academics and not professional services staff. The roles will cost the university at least £2.3m a year and are being promoted as a cost saving!

Redundancies were ruled out on three occasions by the most senior staff member at the University of Dundee. Once to STV, once to staff and once in an interview with the Courier. Now they are denying they said it when in front of our elected representatives.

Incredibly sad

I am really proud to be part of a union that is standing up for all colleagues and their jobs. Our members are really special and we thank them for voting again and winning the ability to choose to take industrial action, if it comes to that.

In April, the University of Dundee commissioned a report by AAB on financial accounting during the financial crisis. It found that draft versions of management accounts were altered before they reached UEG. In one case the report cannot explain why the reported cash position improved by £20.9M.

It is difficult to trust people in power when there is very strong evidence that they’ve not been telling the truth.

It is terrifying that such successful female research professors can be targeted for redundancy by the University. If they can be targeted, we all can.
