I think I've finally landed on the core hook / story of this game I've been fiddling with recently. The easiest way I can explain it is...taking the movie Groundhog Day and turning it into a game instead. Not new territory by any means, but framing it like that helps me focus on the bigger picture.

Alright y'all, I'm MOSTLY hyped for the new Starfox. A bit disheartened it's the original stages and basically an enhanced remake, but probably one I'll actually pick up. What I'd REALLY want is just the mechanics of 64, but with an entirely new campaign with only new settings.

Some more work on the revised city area. Kinda procrastinating some of the more involved things like the FPS section idea, so that's what I think I'll tackle next. I've been focusing on theme and vibe for now and it's feeling good, but I need to focus back on gameplay. #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Thinking about redoing the city from scratch and doing an actual grey box stage. I've gotta get better about that in general. When I try, I still end up getting lost in topology details. If any #gamedev folk have resources for approaching 3D level design (low poly, retro stuff) let me know

Decided to start using a mind map to plan out all the connections in this game (as well as brainstorm new ones). Dark bubbles represent areas, white bubbles represent what you can do, find, etc. Hopefully this'll ultimately help me figure out how to connect all the locks and keys.

One of the core rules I'm going for with this game is to always surprise the player...so I whipped up an FPS movement and camera mode that can be unlocked at some point. Might have a Doom-like section...or just let them whip out a Nerf gun at any point to shoot stuff #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Man, there are so many bangers in the Mario Kart World soundtrack. As someone who has been listening to random remixes of Nintendo music for forever now, getting a whole bunch of new stuff from Nintendo themselves is a real treat.

One thing in #gamedev I've learned is to never underestimate deleting a bunch of work and doing it again, but differently. Everything I don't feel great about weighs on me, making it harder to continue the project until I just decide to scrap it. Pruning is a necessary part of the process!

More random arcade stuff. I need to actually make a DDR challenge and replace the screen (it's just duplicating the viewport for now), but all the buttons and lights are hooked up! Making games within games is kind of interesting. #godot #gamedev #indiedev

One thing I love about being a solo #gamedev is that you'll be working on gameplay, realize you need an asset, and the next minute you're modeling and painting a pair of Ugg boots for some reason. (The purpose is to have an unlockable that allows you to walk silently) #indiedev

Every year or so, I think about playing through Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle again, but then I remember there's a bunch of annoying overworld puzzles and I just don't. It's a really fun and good strategy game with an amazing soundtrack! The sequel is alright too but suffers from the same problem.

I don't care for generated imagery, regardless of how obvious or funny it is. Or whether it suits my political views. It's poisoning the common well of information. Posting it at all is bad, but doing so without explicitly labeling it as fake is even worse. Shame on anybody who does.

I promise today isn't a politics day for me...but every now and then I actually read these posts, from our PRESIDENT, and am somehow freshly disgusted by the fact he exists. "As everyone knows, I am an extraordinarily brilliant person" I mean come on. It's just embarrassing we're at this point.

Really hate that being good at something nowadays earns you being accused of AI. It's not something that happens often to me or anything, but just in general it's sad that the people who put 1000's of hours into developing a skill have to deal with that crap.

After a friends suggestion, and because I was super bored, I've decided to make an addon for Godot that plays elevator music while things load... Is it useful? No. Is it fun? For sure!

I do #gamedev for the love of the craft. Sometimes though, the dream of making it big one day (making it medium, even) is partially what drives the motivation. The hopeful part of me says "man it would be nice to just make an average living creating silly games for people to play".

I keep forgetting that I basically only started 3D modeling "for real" a year or so ago. Modeling was intimidating, rigging was intimidating, UV mapping was intimidating... Some of those are still intimidating, but the difference now is I've failed a dozen ways and know how to fix everything 👍

Today I modeled a pyramid, a UFO, and wrote some dialogue about a ghost with IBS. None of them are particularly related et, I just had the urge. I think I'm onto something with this whole "no bad ideas" policy and making stuff by the seat of my pants. #gamedev #indiedev #godot

Sometimes the more exciting parts of #gamedev are EXTREMELY boring visually. For example...persisting the locations of objects between level loads as demonstrated here. I had to concede defeat on allowing carrying items to new levels though. I could do it, it's just more annoying. #godot #indiedev

Continuing to mess around with this #godot #gamedev project. Kinda settling on a city for the main setting, but if I allow things to go into "weird" territory, anything is game. Right now focusing on general feel, not really gameplay which makes me uneasy. BUT, I think it's right for this project.

Pretty much! With the 3D mascot platformer project, even the vertical slice was not meeting my expectations. I could have kept going and finished it at that level of quality, but it would have felt disappointing. I feel good about shifting to something else.

A glimpse into my mind as I brainstorm ideas for this new game I'm vibing out (not that kind). My idea here is "throw everything at the wall, see what sticks, then do those things". I want the game to be kind of like a smorgasbord of small but dense experiences and this seems like a good way to go.

Sometimes I kind of just forget music exists (I'm a weirdo who mostly listens to podcasts if I'm doing audio-only stuff). Then I randomly decide to listen to some and find myself getting all teary-eyed and realize it's amazing again.

Started a #godot project using some game jam stuff. All I know right now is I want an Animal Crossing vibe but a bit grungy/moody/retro. Minimal platforming, mostly about talking to characters, interacting and exploring a world, etc. Something dense, but only takes a few hours. #gamedev #indiedev

Nothing makes me willing to go out of my way to block randos more than when they post AI-generated images. Even if those images are benign. In fact that almost makes me more mad, in some ways. Stop muddying the waters of reality! What is wrong with you.
