As my City Council term ends — and we welcome two new members to their first City Council meeting tonight, including new District 3 Councilmember Christy Cammarata — I just want to say thank you. Serving as your Councilmember has been one of the great honors of my life.

Many #Bremerton families — especially Shipyard workers — are going without pay during the shutdown. Kitsap Transit, PSE, Cascade Gas & Foodline have stepped up. It’s time for the City to follow suit and let furloughed workers defer utility payments until paychecks resume.

Some of the public comments at last night’s Council meeting — part of a troubling and growing trend — were alarming. From outright insults to denigrating language and disregard for both facts and the rules our government follows, these tactics only divide our community and distract from solutions.

I was surprised to read in today’s Kitsap Sun that the Mayor has halted all DEI activities in the city and is asking the Council to permanently eliminate them. On Tuesday, I chaired the Finance Committee meeting where we discussed the federal funding freeze related to DEI.
