The frustrating thing about the Star Trek discourse is it sucks that they're being dismissed as bad because they're 'woke' -- which is obviously dumb because Star Trek's politics have always been progressive, but also it is true that most of the new Trek shows are not good.

One thing I love about replaying RPGs is appreciating companions I ignored the first go around. When I played KOTOR as a kid I didn’t care about grumpy old man Jolee. Replaying a few years ago; he was the lynchpin of the emotional journey. Had the same experience with Sera in DA Inq

Star Trek: The Next Generation, possibly the best television show ever, is not about spaceships shooting lasers at each other, it is about a man who represents the best of us trying to teach his robot son to be human while debating whether humans even deserve to exist with his best frenemy, God.

When my mom was reading the Left Behind books when I was little, I got hooked on Left Behind: The Kids and I remember my main takeaway was an intense feeling of FOMO that I’d be stuck in heaven after the Rapture while a clique of outcast teens had post-apocalyptic adventures

It's fascinating that Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite came out the same year and have identical narrative structures -- and both end with the question: is the world as it is, with all its misery, worth holding onto for what's good. Last of Us answers "yes" and Infinite weirdly goes "nope"

"The NYT has always loved protests as history but hated them as news." I talked about this a bit on a show today. I think a lot of establishment makes a big fuss about protests not meaning anything (for obvious reasons) but behind closed doors history shows us they DO have a significant impact.

For the last five years my friends have watched a movie every Monday. We pick on a rotation and the only rule being that half the group can’t have seen it. Last night we had our Fifth Annual Nuties, with the Best Picture winner taking home a small statue of Nute Gunray

Had a kind of interesting journalistic quandary. We're doing a story about a church helping to clean up the Potomac in Alexandria today and I was like "I recognize this name" and they're a pretty notorious cult in South Korea. I was inclined to mention that in a story but another editor --

The third Thrawn book focuses on a fight for R&D funding between Thrawn’s next generation of TIE fighters and Krennic’s Death Star. This is, no joke, the kind of shit I love in my Star Wars

For years I’ve been like “the later Dune books aren’t really worth reading but Dune Messiah is the best one and Dune feels incomplete without it” and it’s kind of nutty that the people who shared that opinion are making the movies. (Sorry Children and God-Emperor lovers)

There’s one copy of each of the six Thrawn audiobooks at the Falls Church library. There’s apparently one other person working through them at the same time, trading holds, and I kind of want to hang out with them and swap reviews.

I know I've said my piece about this before, but I disagree with a LOT of crime reporting. We're running a story today (I have no say over this) about a woman who was previously accused of killing her mother being arrested again for disorderly conduct --

It's funny watching a Fairfax County report and remembering when I used to take one item (crime stats, a parks update, etc) and find ways to spin that out into five stories. I'm almost nostalgic for that. Now it's "take this whole meeting and find one 15 second soundbite"

Swivel from the actual point of this post but: In addition to the "Alexandria, Fairfax" nonsense my Alexandria crank issue is we never should have let the city get away backsliding on recording meetings after Covid.

I know this is just the nature of doing news in the US but it does seem bizarre and a little vile that most of the top-line-item news stuff about the war against Iran is the impact on gas prices and not "we've murdered over 1,300 civilians in Iran including around 170 girls in a school"
