A scientist with another language draws broader conclusions. A lawyer with a language builds a stronger case. A journalist with a language gets the real stories. A teacher with a language inspires the next generation. The power of languages takes you to a higher level, whatever field you're in.

A Level still contains questions that are not appropriate at this level. This one seems designed to reward native speakers and "feel" for connotation/collocation over and above any rules or knowledge learned in school. Too hard for many teachers!

Nearly 50% of A* grades for A Level German go to native speakers. The exams are too hard for pupils who have learned the language in school. The exam boards cite this as "discriminating well".

Another language is not just a new way of communicating. It’s an insight into another way of life. It’s your introduction to another culture’s music, sport, food, joy and fun. It’s a connection with other human beings. It takes you beyond your own surroundings. It’s a more open outlook on the world.

You don't have to be good at languages to create new connections, enjoy heightened experiences, discover other ways of thinking, relate to people whose experiences differ from yours or see the other side of the story. Another language will open your mind and elevate your life.

What starts with school French, German or Spanish will take you beyond the classroom & around the world. Not only will it give you new perspectives on every subject, but it can lead you to Chinese or Korean, Arabic or Farsi, Turkish or Ukrainian. You'll be a citizen of the world.

When you learn French at school, you unlock Catalan & Romanian. Learn German, & the mysteries of English are explained. Take Spanish, & Italian & Portuguese make more sense. If you get the chance to learn Mandarin, Arabic or Sign Language, grab it. Wherever you're headed, languages take you further.

Learning a language isn’t all about words, cases and tenses; it’s about unlocking doors to new worlds. Every effort, no matter how small, brings you closer to connection, understanding and unforgettable experiences. The rewards aren’t just practical; they’re life-changing. The journey is worth it.

Why do languages matter? Because they’re the key to human interaction. Because they give you fresh insights into history, politics & society. Because you feel music, film & literature more authentically with another language. Languages make connections.

Learning a language is not about fluency and perfection. It's about understanding and connecting with other human beings, respecting other cultures and traditions, making an effort and reaping the rewards. Another language benefits everyone, and everyone can 'do' another language. Enjoy the ride!

When I was at school, French was an exciting new world. German was the cool, fun language you got to learn next. Spanish was the language l fell in love with. Italian was an unexpected adventure and Latin was a fascinating time machine. Why can't everyone have these opportunities?

My favourite activity at the moment: children can see the 10 words we are working on. I say 9 of them randomly, then they have to tell me which one I didn't say. Always goes well and they get to hear the vocab lots of times. Helps to prepare in advance 👍.
