Very sensible, no doubt, not to plant a new “Hardy” tree amidst the gravestones in St Pancras Old Churchyard when the original fell in 2022 (rather in better growing conditions nearby). But also rather prosaic not to.

The Basilica of St Ursula in Cologne was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman cemetery, and the walls of its Golden Chamber are covered with the carefully arranged bones of its occupants, alleged to be St Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins.

This could be a long and rambling thread. Be patient with me. I bought an old mahogany bureau on Ebay. I didn't really want a bureau as we're meant to be downsizing, but it was a beautiful piece & obviously very old. Google lens suggests the brass chased handles are Queen Anne. That's 1702-1714 😯

The White Lion in Lewes, despite the company of nesting birds, seems sad his pub was demolished in 1937. More so, perhaps, when he learns he’s a replica, his C18 original now in the Town Hall.

Bronze & enamel lectern by Gilbert Bayes in the Savoy Chapel, memorial to Laurence (son of Henry) Irving who drowned with 1000 others when the Empress of Ireland sank off Canada in 1914. Its captain Henry Kendall, on his prior ship, sent the radio message that led to Dr Crippen's arrest.

Magnus Volk at St Wulfran, Ovingdean. Inventor of Volk's Electric Railway in Brighton, the world's oldest still-operating electric railway, and the wonderful if short-lived Brighton & Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway that ran through the sea on stilts. At low tide you can still see sleepers.
