By Obediah Johnson, [email protected] In a joint statement issued in Monrovia, the groups said many young Liberians continue to grow up without access to accurate health information, safe spaces, mentorship, mental health support, livelihood opportunities, and protection from exploitation, drugs, peer pressure, online abuse, and violence. The organizations noted that many young people are struggling with substance abuse, limited access to skills training, and the absence of trusted support systems for guidance and protection. According to the groups, Liberian families have endured decades of hardship, including civil war, displacement, economic instability, and postwar recovery, while continuing to demonstrate resilience. They emphasized that families across Liberia are structured in different forms, including extended relatives, single-parent households, grandparents raising children, blended families, and communal care systems that have long supported communities through difficult periods. Despite these coping mechanisms, the groups said many households continue to grapple with the lingering trauma of the civil war, gender-based violence, unsafe abortion, weak healthcare systems, and limited opportunities for young people.
