Another "riverine" fish, the European flounder Platichthys flesus is found regularly but in low densities along the main rivers of Portugal. In the Tagus river it occurs up to 100 km upstream. #25daysofFishmas #MARE here is a picture of a catch!

Small-head barbel, Luciobarbus microcephalus - it is endemic of thr Guadiana drainage (Iberian Peninsula). This barbel co-exists with three other barbels, being a herbivore fish, a unique feature within Iberian fish communities! #25daysofFishmas #Mare

The European seabass occurs in freshwater habitats along the main stream of large rivers. We find this species 120km from the upper Tagus estuary! #25daysofFishmas this specimen was collected about 70km from its estuary in the lotic system. More here doi.org/10.1111/jfb.15…

Another Iberian endemic fish for the #25daysofFishmas - the longsnouted barbel - Luciobarbus comizo! This cyprinid only occurs in two main drainages the Guadiana and Tagus rivers. The larger individuals are predators of other smaller species. A rare feature within Iberian fish communities.

14th day of the #25daysofFishmas with a macrophthalmic Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) collected in the lower Tagus river! Native to pur waters it has been declining decade after decade mostly due to overfishing and habitat loss. @MAREscience
