This is a phenomenon known as ‘drift’, where languages develop independently but in similar ways. It has always been quite problematic, because it’s something that we have seen time and again, but seems to require some sort of guiding invisible hand. I try to flesh out how this can happen.

Overall, my conclusion is that we can’t exclude explanations that rely on contact, but the evidence in favour of them is also weak: rather, it seems that the languages happened to be sufficiently similar to each other that the ‘regular’ course of change gave them somewhat similar outcomes.

The central puzzle is this: there are some sound patterns that are quite unusual from a global perspective, but apparently cluster in the languages of northern Europe — defined here as roughly the region around the North Sea and the Baltic: especially Celtic, Germanic, and Sámi.
