Another post on Castlevania II Progress! I'm in the middle of tackling attributes, which control the palettes the BG tiles use. It's one of the more complicated undertakings in the ports, but it's coming along nicely! Here's a couple minutes of footage of the beginning of the game.

@retro-access.com Is there something about retro-access.com/product/gen1... that makes it incompatible with a SMS? Or would it just have the 3.5mm jack hanging around but still work?

Ok, maybe someone knows more about this than me. But why does Castlevania II on the FDS have so much English text? The prologue and the ending are both entirely in English. Is that not odd? Did Japanese children know enough English to read this? The rest of the game is all in Japanese.

I've been playing through my FDS version of Castlevania II, and the music is just a joy (apologies for the 10s of FDS loading at the beginning)

Completed a full playthrough on my Castlevania II port. This is a good milestone, it means the game logic is solid. The only issues I encountered were either related to the romhack enhancements, or things I know I haven't done yet (like music/palettes/bank switching)

Met so many great people, had a fantastic panel, and reconnected with some of the best people in the retro community at Retro World Expo and Nes Fest. The best retro con I've attended, I can't recommend it enough!

Yuuuuup. Also, I don't give a shit if some of the worst people in the world think I am being performative or am virtue signaling. Fuck 'em. They don't get to tell me how to be. Anyway, trans rights are human rights, y'all. It's not complicated.

I knew this part of the port would be hairy, and there's still some quirks to work out, but the SRAM saving/loading is working!

@displacedgamers.bsky.social this one's for you. first screen of Rover Mansion comparison. NES has lots of noticeable lag, the early version of my SNES port is buttery smooth. Also, sprite palettes are all updated, and BG tile palettes are updated, but everything is using palette 0.

Castlevania II Enhanced progress update! Getting into the main game now, and while palettes aren't ported yet, the game is surprisingly playable. Lots more to do yet!

After a bit of a break, I've begun work in earnest on my next project! This one is a bit different, and I'm hoping to leverage the amazing work that @bisqwit.bsky.social has done on Castlevania II amazing improvements. I'll be porting their romhack version instead of the original game.

Not enough people talk about Phantasy Star 4 as one of the great 16 bit RPGs. But I just played through it this weekend and it's great! fast pacing, cool characters, good story. And if you played the earlier games (especially 1 & 2) there's tons of fan service that doesn't feel shoe-horned in.

In less than a 3 day weekend, and under 100 builds, I've got a 95% working Castlevania port. Next up is debugging, MSU-1 soundtracks, improving on some of the sfx/music, and maybe a few other surprises.

I've started on my next NES to SNES project, and in just over a day, I've already got a fully playable version, rolling credits. No correct palettes or audio, but getting a game playable so quickly is an awesome start. This is another Konami joint that I think people will recognize:

A quick revision to Life Force has been posted: Revision B Fixes: * Boss music will now properly mute after the boss is dead Also, I removed the sfc file from the zip file, so it only contains the MSU-1 related files. This is so that if I update the rom, I don't have to re-upload the 300MB zip.

Konami's NES Shmup Life Force / Salamander Has Been Ported To The SNES.

I'm only slightly less excited to release Rev A of my Life Force port! Mega.nz has been updated, archive.org will be soon. Rev A Fixes: * Continuing will now properly reset the right memory range * Boss music will now fade in when MSU-1 is unavailable or off surely no more issues will arise.

What's the best way to find bugs in your work? Release it because as soon as you do, you find issues! I'm aware of an issue where you're unable to continue in Life Force. My current work-around is for you to get good, but a fix should be coming soon if you do need to continue =)
