Bit of a hiatus, but work continues on my next port, it's coming along nicely, and it does things very differently from other games I've ported so it's been a fun learning experience. Here's the current progress for it, enjoy!

I was finally able to dig into why my Castlevania II SNES port's Save Menu was locking up only in Snes9x. (For those curious, it appears to be something related to how it handles reading the $4210 register). I've updated my port to version 1.2 which should now fully function in Snes9x.

I've been spending some time the last few days collaborating with Fiuke Bnuy on this update to my Castlevania port. I think it's going to be really cool if we can pull it off. All of the tilework is done by Fiuke, I've just been providing scaffolding and support on the romhack.

FYI, seems like the in-game save menu in Castlevania II is not compatible with Snes9x. No idea why since it's fine on original hardware. Passwords should still work.

And now a fix for my latest game! I missed the knockback sound effect (actually all dcpm sfx, and am going to go back and see if CV2 uses any more). I've rectified the situation and updated both archive.org and mega.nz locations with the latest file. Music disabled in this clip to demonstrate.

I just finished uploading new versions of my first 8 ports (everything up to Castlevania 1/2). Most of the games got only a minor change in how I read the joypad data in order to support more modern controllers like the Limted Run Games Rumble controller I'll outline other changes in replies here!

Another post on Castlevania II Progress! I'm in the middle of tackling attributes, which control the palettes the BG tiles use. It's one of the more complicated undertakings in the ports, but it's coming along nicely! Here's a couple minutes of footage of the beginning of the game.

@retro-access.com Is there something about retro-access.com/product/gen1... that makes it incompatible with a SMS? Or would it just have the 3.5mm jack hanging around but still work?

Ok, maybe someone knows more about this than me. But why does Castlevania II on the FDS have so much English text? The prologue and the ending are both entirely in English. Is that not odd? Did Japanese children know enough English to read this? The rest of the game is all in Japanese.

I've been playing through my FDS version of Castlevania II, and the music is just a joy (apologies for the 10s of FDS loading at the beginning)

Completed a full playthrough on my Castlevania II port. This is a good milestone, it means the game logic is solid. The only issues I encountered were either related to the romhack enhancements, or things I know I haven't done yet (like music/palettes/bank switching)

Met so many great people, had a fantastic panel, and reconnected with some of the best people in the retro community at Retro World Expo and Nes Fest. The best retro con I've attended, I can't recommend it enough!

Yuuuuup. Also, I don't give a shit if some of the worst people in the world think I am being performative or am virtue signaling. Fuck 'em. They don't get to tell me how to be. Anyway, trans rights are human rights, y'all. It's not complicated.

I knew this part of the port would be hairy, and there's still some quirks to work out, but the SRAM saving/loading is working!

@displacedgamers.bsky.social this one's for you. first screen of Rover Mansion comparison. NES has lots of noticeable lag, the early version of my SNES port is buttery smooth. Also, sprite palettes are all updated, and BG tile palettes are updated, but everything is using palette 0.

Castlevania II Enhanced progress update! Getting into the main game now, and while palettes aren't ported yet, the game is surprisingly playable. Lots more to do yet!

After a bit of a break, I've begun work in earnest on my next project! This one is a bit different, and I'm hoping to leverage the amazing work that @bisqwit.bsky.social has done on Castlevania II amazing improvements. I'll be porting their romhack version instead of the original game.

Not enough people talk about Phantasy Star 4 as one of the great 16 bit RPGs. But I just played through it this weekend and it's great! fast pacing, cool characters, good story. And if you played the earlier games (especially 1 & 2) there's tons of fan service that doesn't feel shoe-horned in.
