Decades ago, I supported mandatory helmet laws for people riding bikes. Then I was convinced by evidence and the bigger picture that such laws are actually counter-productive in many ways. This NZ article explains some. I support helmets, but not mandatory helmet laws. Build safe infrastructure.

A pickup truck hit a cyclist on Quadra a couple days ago. Two weeks before that there were two hit and runs by car drivers in bike lanes. One on Finlayson and Quadra and one on Gorge East and Dunedin. The one on Quadra/Finlayson is the exact same spot cyclists were hit in August 2024 and July 2019.

Opinion: ODOT’s crisis is a spending problem, not a revenue problem

It amazes me that Marg Gardiner, #yyj council member, has been opposing the continued use of the Ogden Point terminal for cruise ship traffic since at least 2013. Her main complaint is the air pollution. And yet she also publicly opposed the shore power project announced this year. Interesting.

This week the 2025 People For Bikes city ratings dropped. One highlight is that #YYJ is ranked #5 in Canada and #2 in #BC after only Squamish! Our score was dragged down by transit access though, and we’d definitely be higher if it wasn’t for that!

Today from 1:30 to 3:30 at the central branch of the Victoria Public Library there is a family-friendly event to mark the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. This is a free event with children’s activities and two important speakers for the grownups. #yyj
