As the year comes to a close and I'm headed back to the region, here's one of the best books I read in 2024. 'On the Shadow Tracks' by Clare Hammond tells the story of British colonialism and of lives under brutal rule through the #infrastructure of the Myanmar railway. A captivating read.

Further north should have been the Aral Sea - the world's 4th largest lake until 1960. But the sea is no more. Large irrigation projects and overharvesting of rivers have turned the lake into a vast desert. The scale of the disaster is staggering. I wasn't aware. www.unccd.int/news-stories... 3/

A few weeks ago I returned from research fieldwork in Thailand. Morning flight, sunny skies throughout the journey. Mesmerised by the view from the airplane window - struck by beauty and fragility in equal measure. 🧵

So *many* concerns here, but I don't understand why would a qualitative researcher even want this? Why not use a survey instead?The whole point of qualitative interviews is that we co-produce knowledge with our interlocutors through participation in the research process.
