This was specifically one of the points of contention in the conflict between Bakunin and Engels/Marx in the First International, the fact that Bakunin supported national liberation and Engels thought that was stupid because some peoples (supposedly) are inferior and should be colonized.

Irony being that marxist support for national (self)liberation and peasant/native movements comes primarily from anarchism, it is not something that Marx and Engels were big on (initially), it's something that later marxists like Lenin and Mao took from anarchism.
