During thunderstorms, electric discharges in the air cause trees to glow with an ultraviolet aura. You can't see it with your eyes, but researchers have finally managed to measure it & recreate it in the lab. 🧪🔭

A cool thing in these JWST 🔭 Uranus infrared images -- ASIDE from the (artificially-blue) polar cap & the dynamic bright clouds -- is the imaging of the aurora! It is the reddish glow extending above the clouds (e.g. 10 o'clock in the image on the right)

There were requests for textures from my maps in more suitable projection for use in other projects. I have most of them directly in projections used in maps. The exception is the Pluto map where I made the base map directly in the cylindrical projection, so here it is

The Vandenberg launch of February 14th, 2026 was optimally timed for illumination of the initial as well as the lingering plume. Tonight this plume underwent intriguing looping and stretching as Earths shadow passed across it with reds, golds and blues dominating the last lighting here and there.

The deposits around the volcano Pele on Io looked like a heart as Voyager 1 approached in March of 1979. For today, I rotated it around to emphasize that. By the time Galileo saw it in 1996, the indentation at the top of this image was mostly gone. Happy Valentine's Day!

This is a real timelapse video of the Moon transiting in front of the Earth. It was captured by the Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft in November 2022 while flying at it's furthest point from the Earth. The video covers about 3.75 hours of real time. 🔭🧪

MIRI IFU 🔭 images of proplyd 551-51201 in NGC 1977. It is basically a protoplanetary disk around a young star that is being evaporated away by radiation coming from nearby massive stars (outside the frame, called 42 Orionis).

A few months ago they let me walk around the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex at night. Don't know if it was the desert rain, watching skyscraper-sized antennas swivel to catch signals from beyond Saturn, or just my fillings buzzing from the radio signals, but I had goosebumps all night.

Titania is the largest of the Uranian moons. While Voyager couldn't fly close to it and still get to Neptune, it recorded more images of it than any other moon. The surface appears cratered with some clear tectonic features. The highest resolution images were at 4.5 km/pixel.
