Happy New Year! For January’s Twin Cinema Movie Club, we’ll be going over (and over and over) a couple of high-concept low-budget time loop movies 📽️ Can we outrun ourselves, or has our future always already happened? TIMECRIMES is dark & Fincher-y, BEYOND is incredibly clever & fun. Both on Kanopy!

It's a Christmas miracle, I finally had time to finish the 4th and final installment of my essay series on gentrification of cinema, concluding with temperance films, the Karen-ification of the nickelodeons, & the invention of narrative cinema 📽️#filmsky

As I was about to make cookies, my kitchen sink decided to clog suddenly and without warning after years of seamless disposaling. After 20 minutes of sweaty plunging, the clog has moved to my shower drain. At 9pm on Christmas Eve eve. I’m having a Clark Griswold moment

The last few weeks I’ve been regulating my emotions by cramming episodes of LOST into every available second of the day. What a great scifi show & so many episodes to feast on. Also Michael Emerson’s line deliveries are 🤌

Backstory: some years ago I was having some health issues & my doc said to cut out a few foods to see if it helped, & it did. Which led me to many years w/o dairy. Recently I’ve been reintroducing cheese into my diet & it’s gone well. But I am ignorant about cheeses bc of the long break

📽️ The Princess Bride might be the most broadly popular movie ever made. I know a lot of people feel like I do, like it’s part of their family lore. The last Thanksgiving with my dad, he wasn’t really there, but I put The Princess Bride on the TV and he just beamed and we watched it together.

📽️ these career retrospective posts are grim. These people were stabbed to death. I feel sick, I need to process it first. I am not ready for the heartwarming “I grew up loving his movies, RIP” posts, it’s jarring. No one can wait half a day before using this news to self-promote? Ugh this is gross

Twin Cinema Movie Club this morning! We’re discussing two recent films about robot companions. If you’ve never actually read the essay that birthed the term “uncanny valley” I highly recommend it. Short & eye-opening 📽️ linked here

Show me a picture on your phone that has your energy that isn’t a selfie. This picture of my cat Scully snoozing on a niche early film history book and some fresh post-its is basically me. I could be even nerdier if I wasn’t always so sleepy 📽️👽😸

📽️ here are some of my favorite movies that are clearly train movies but also support my ‘train movie’ thesis: Unstoppable Strangers on a Train (& Throw Momma from the Train) Snowpiercer 3:10 to Yuma The Darjeeling Ltd Brief Encounter North by Northwest Murder on the Orient Express

📽️ what makes a train movie? Glad you asked. A significant sequence has to take place on a train or train tracks, and ideally that scene is part of the film’s central theme of inevitability / fate. Some movies have little actual train but are very train-y (Train Dreams is a perfect example)

📽️ just finished Train Dreams, another excellent train movie. I’ve been cooking an essay series on train movies for years. TLDR: there’s a weird amount of trains in movies because trains are movies and movies are trains. I promise after 5,000 words it would make more sense

Before Netflix absorbs everything into its shadowless algorithm content blob, I encourage you to use Kanopy. It’s free through the library & I use it constantly. The more you use it, the more the library can justify asking for continued funding for it. Their merch money goes to the library too.

But I’m seeing doom & gloom in a year with new well-reviewed films by Ryan Coogler, PTA, GDT, Chloe Zhao, Kelly Reichardt, Ari Aster, Jia Zhangke, Joachim Trier, Richard Linklater, Edgar Wright, JAFAR PANAHI, and a whole bunch of newcomers with fresh interesting voices. My 2025 watchlist is PACKED

The media industry is enshittifying & Netflix wants to own your eyeballs. It’s harder than ever to get your money into the hands of the artist. Monoculture is dead so no matter how good a movie is almost no one you know will have seen it. I’m not saying things are great

In the last two months I’ve watched films from Hollywood but also South Korea, Sweden, China, Iran, Germany, England, Spain. I watched a movie that grossed $15,000 worldwide. It ruled. Having worked tiny film festivals, there’s so much cool stuff no one would ever get to see if it weren’t online.
