I’ve been working on a C-Suite high priority ask recently. About the last 3.5 weeks straight of nothing but this. Taking a table in Snowflake with ~90 million rows, doing some drastic transformations/reordering of timestamps + metrics based off those and historical performance.

Random thought, may be very stupid: If DuckLake uses databases for metadata, and open files for data, wouldn’t this reduce storage across environments (DEV, QA, UAT, PROD)? The only changes would be to metadata, all environments use the same data sources… or do all DBs work like this? #databs

This is genius. If I’m understanding correctly, metadata is handled by a DuckDB compatible SQL database and the actual data is handled by an open file format of your choice. You can perform familiar SQL queries and DDL, on highly scalable open format data files. Well done! #databs #dataengineering

I have to say, the difference in quality of the data environments and organizations between my previous and current role (both F500), is wild. Newer company is definitely smaller (people/revenue), but the data workflows and uses are 10 years ahead. Really fun place to be!

Started a new role recently, still doing some reporting work, but the bulk of my time is now spent in databases working with SQL and dbt, instead of just populating visuals. Still not 100% data engineering, but way happier getting to work in the database more, ad hoc reporting is my nemesis

Can someone explain or give me a reason why #snowflake doesn’t let you alter a column’s data type (think 2 digit number to max length varchar)? Did this at work yesterday, but instead of ALTER COLUMN, I created a new one using the new data type, then copied all values and dropped the old #databs

All time Austin airport moment as I boarded my flight, ~10 minutes ago. A guy with a Spanish passport had ~4 tote bags, he tried to bring on. Gate agent asked him to consolidate, he pretends he doesn’t speak English and she immediately translates in fluent Spanish… guy spoke English after that😂

As someone who just converted everything to Bitwarden: stop limiting passwords to 16 alphanumeric characters and/or limiting which special characters are acceptable. I don’t see how increasing possible complexity makes your systems any less secure. #cybersecurity
