Honestly? Being fuckin’ normal. Find other writers, publishers, etc whose work I like and respect, engage with it, share it, talk about it. Writing is a solitary field and it’s also full of a lot of scammers selling access and tips, being a normal person just chatting and sharing works. #twsochat

A2. It’s cringe, but I’m sure I’ve made connections with writers over responding to Engagement Prompts (without saying X, what’s your favourite Y, etc). It can be that simple. #TWSOchat

A2 not really. I find as a writer with a day job deep in a novel manuscript, when I have time, id rather just write

A1 this one is hard for me. My social battery is very weak. I feel very happy to have come across Candy in the other website a while back. my kid is very serious about writing so we share with each other, and recently I met someone at work who writes scripts so we also share, so basically by chance

Q7. Have you ever reached out to another writer because you loved their work and built an authentic connection that way? How do find the writing community where you are? Is it difficult to make connections and find friendship with other writers? #TWSOchat

I met my fiancé through a local writing group, and now she’s my alpha reader and biggest support. Does that count? 😅

Q6. How do you protect your own solitude when you are involved in the literary community? Do you have favourite spaces that you go to alone? Do you listen to music as you write? Do you block out time to just be alone and let friends/family know not to bother you during your writing time? #TWSOchat

A1. Same advice I give to my kids about making friends. Pursue your passions, nurture your obsessions. The people you’re going to vibe with will be there. #TWSOchat

Another tip is to approach community building with the attitude of “how can I help?” How can you empower others to be their best creative selves? How can you support your fellow writers? If everyone in the community has this attitude, everyone benefits.

Our biggest tip is that you can’t wait for someone to do it for you! Our founder was frustrated with the difficulty of connecting with other genre writers in Vancouver, and started this group in 2018 to gather them together. Since then, we’ve grown to more than 300 members.
