Banana Yoshimoto (1964- ) is famous for incorporating the “kawaii” (“lovely”, “adorable”) aesthetic into her work. Because kawaii is so strongly associated with young women, It took a long time for critics and other writers to take Yoshimoto seriously. Her work is no longer so lightly dismissed.

So here’s a longer comic called Zim Zam the Dwarf. It’s 21 pages long and about a dwarf who is definitely a dwarf and not a goblin wearing a mask!!!

On arriving back in Ireland, Oisin cannot find his family and friends nor anyone who can remember them. Turns out he has been away 300 years and when he steps off the horse, he ages 300 years immediately. He tells his story to a local monk, is baptised and dies.

After a while In Tir Na Nog, Oisin grew homesick and wanted to see his family again. Niamh tried to persuade him not to but when she failed sent him back on her white horse, but warned if he ever left the horses back, he would never be able to return to her.

In the traditional myth, Niamh Cinn Or came riding a white horse and invited Oisin to come and live with her in Tir Na Nog, which is the Land of the Young, a type of island paradise or fairyland.
