IMHO, Bobby was somehow the most GD of all the GDs. He just a kid when he joined, raised by the Band. One of a kind, those physics no longer exist. photo: Greg Gaar, Greek 83

Thanks to
@jerrybase.bsky.social
for chasing these down and
@bourgwick.bsky.social
for starting the discussion - we're now tracking the "NFA reprise" encores on Jerrybase, which, amusingly, are more accurately termed "reprise" than the standard head term "Playin' Reprise"
add a skeleton here at some point

60 years ago today, john coltrane recorded "om" in seattle while (according to several biographers) tripping on LSD. the next night, he performed "a love supreme" in its entirety for one of the only known times. idk seems significant?

project examining documents from the grateful dead archive. he's got a new scholarly book out in spring about "touch of grey" (!!). "live dead" was ace, too, a close read of the dead's live recordings.

has reminded me that today marks the 50th anniversary of the first Jerry Garcia Band show. Gone of course are Merl and Martin, welcome Nicky Hopkins! This lineup just lasted through NYE of that year, but I am guessing you knew that already ;)

This new Warfield release ❤️ got me thinkin'. Oh boy, by 1991 JGB had LOTS of tunes. Here's a lil query to demonstrate. I am counting 1991 as the top year, 1975 and 1976 are tilted by wasted piano guys hogging the mic.

JGB distinct songs by year
1976 does not really count due to the James Booker stint, and a lot of the songs from 1975 are just Nicky singing with the band applying minimal backup.

Sadly not enough of these, but here's all times Jerry played outside the US. Someone asked me this and the site does not allow for this kind of search natively.

Over a Jerrybase we have an experimental feature to be able to ask stuff like "Show me all the times Jerry played in Golden Gate Park". It converts natural language into a database query. Not sure how you feel about that. In any case, it generated this result.

Young Ozzy Osbourne spotted backstage at the Hollywood Festival, Newcastle-under-Lyme, England (May 23-24, 1970), at which Black Sabbath and the Grateful Dead performed. This split-second cameo appears in the lost documentary of the Dead’s first trip to England. Thanks for everything, Ozzy.

New source for this show, sounds excellent. Might sound better and be more patched up than other circulating sources. In any case, this has always been one of my favorite JGB shows.
