This is was my submission for Falling Block Jam 2025. A Gururin clone. digidigi-games.itch.io/fairy-spin @kyatt7.bsky.social provided some background critters and @13js.bsky.social provided a brand new music track! It's a little underbaked TBH but it works fine without any gamebreaking bugs.

i have my own critiques of this, but before that i want the spells to do unique things and not just bonus damage.

all the cpu opponent does is a shallow search of every column and rotation, picking the one with the most clears. it doesn't know about chaining or spells. if there are no matches it's basically random except it'll score columns of 5+ height negatively. that's it! and it kicks my ass!

my cpu buddies are fighting again! i've added damage now but it is very mechanical and dry. "score" from matches hits your opponents health and when emptied it pushes the stage up. i've mostly been tweaking things. like, first version of this had damage offset, but i decided i like the entropy

my base idea was basically "columns but you can also match witching stone style spells combos." but as red-yellow-yellow is just as hard as red-red-red (i guess it skews your gem economy but w/e) i had the extra step of upgrading the gems. but... after experimenting i think it's a bit naff?

made a very basic CPU script. here are two of them duking it out #FallingBlockJam

have some unique (afaik!) mechanics now. matching gems upgrades those in the next queue. and upgraded gems can be matched in special ways (bottom left) to cast spellsss.

for #fallingblockjam @playmagicaldrop.com and I are making Ochibana (Fallen Flowers) An arcade style versus puzzle game with a twist: there's a finite amount of pieces, and the game ends when they're gone. You score based on what's still on your board and your cleared pieces build your multiplier!

unfortunately all i've made so far is a completely juiceless puyolumns.

i was thinking about adding meta-progression to witching stone and this is what i wrote on cohost. ultimately i decided against this. the game has many unlockable options and maybe they're not in perfect alignment, but there is no big grind for flat power (and there is an "unlock all" button)
