Making sense of geological data describing how the Arctic has responded to past climatic changes is essential for understanding how the region will evolve in the coming decades.

🧊🌊 A new article in EOS explores how the scientific community is coming together to better understand past Arctic climates – and why it matters today. This topic is at the heart of our ERC project i2B - Into The Blue, as we aim to resolve the Arctic's ancient greenhouse climate puzzle.

Paleodyn's contribution to #EGU25 on Tuesday, 29 April, starts with the oral presentation of our PhD Candidate, Fernanda Matos (@fdaomatos.bsky.social). She will talk about the calculation of the AMOC in density space, and how it becomes crucial in warmer climates, using our AWI-CM3 model.

In session OS1.8, on Monday, 28 April , at 12:05–12:25, in room 1.61/62, Dr. Lohmann will give an oral presentation on the many lessons we can learn from studying past Arctic warm climates. He is one of the leaders of the exciting @i2b-erc.bsky.social project, that focuses in the Arctic!

Future research could explore a high-resolution ocean model setup including ice-shelf cavities and/or incorporating dynamic ice sheets, flexible cavity shapes, and iceberg calving. This article is essential to understand future Antarctic Ice Sheet mass loss and sea-level rise!

The study highlights the critical role of cryosphere−hydrosphere interactions in the Earth's system, particularly due to the implementation of ice cavities in the model, which reduces considerably the model mismatch with observations in relation to the Southern Ocean dynamics.

3. Antarctic ice-shelf cavities adjust the Antarctic Bottom Water formation sites and enhance Southern Ocean dynamics by introducing ice-shelf meltwater.

2. Local hydrographic and topographic conditions play a decisive role in an ice-cavity tipping point, characterized by abrupt warm-water intrusion, rapid basal-melt increases, and massive freshwater release.

They reveal that: 1. With Antarctic ice-shelf cavities, high-emission scenario projections demonstrate accelerated Antarctic basal melt and freshwater discharge, which were ignored in previous Earth System Modeling studies!

The authors implemented Antarctic ice-shelf cavities into AWI-ESM2, which in itself is a huge challenge for the climate modelling community. They conducted CMIP6 (@wcrp-cmip.org) Pre-Industrial, Historical and SSP simulations and propose this work as prototype for the upcoming CMIP7 project.
