For years, I have watched the re-sodding dance in #BishopsPark. @hfcouncil fences off this eastern part of the #urbangreenspace, the grass is revived, the fences come down and almost immediately the grass is worn away.

When I think of London landscapes, this is often what comes to mind: fenced out or fenced in. Yesterday I walked from point a to b for a time-sensitive appointment. I passed 4 formal #urbangreenspaces, but did not walk through any of them because of various railings, fences & inconvenient gates.

St John's Churchyard is a community #urbangreenspace with a colourful history. Initially a field for grazing horses called Horselydown, the site has also been a fairground, yard for local militia, a burial ground, and a recreational space. It is managed by Potters Field Management Trust.

Have you ever noticed how many buildings, roads, neighbourhoods, subdivisions, etc. have park, green or garden in their name? I'd hoped this development, bordering on Wandsworth Park, would have more green infrastructure, thus being worthy of its name. #urbangreenspace

At Malet Street Garden today, I thought about one of my favourite #urbangreenspace quotes: "'Green space,’ of course, is not always perfectly green: sometimes it is a frozen grey or muddy brown or wintry white …. But it is ubiquitous even in the biggest city" (Clark & Jauhiainen, 2006: 2).

Woburn Square is the smallest of the Bloomsbury squares. This #urbangreenspace was bigger, but, like so many of London's green spaces, development reduced it. Still, it offers a calm place to relax and collect my thoughts on my way to lecture each Monday, even when nonstop rain leaves it a mud pit.

Holland Gardens in Merton was established as a public #urbangreenspace in 1929, when Lady Holland donated the site to the then-Wimbledon Council. The garden is on a sloping site, with views from the top over rose beds, lawn, playing fields & tennis courts. @mertoncouncil.bsky.social

Trees in a central London private garden give residents with a view of nature rather than a hectic car park. Sometimes aesthetics are the function of #urbangreenspace.

Grade II* listed Edwardes Square Gardens is a late-Georgian #urbangreenspace in Kensington. When the 3.5-acre space was laid out in 1818, its serpentine paths distinguished it from more formal gardens of the day. Alas, this is a private garden, unless you live in Edwardes Square.

The role of indoor #urbangreenspace is significantly understudied. Yet, we spend ~90% of our time indoors, with the indoor environment greatly affecting health & wellbeing. For years, Vauxhall Tube station staff have maintained indoor plants. Would love to see this scaled up. @greenin.bsky.social

Built in the early 1700s, Queen Square in Bloomsbury originally was developed only on three sides, with the northern edge of this #urbangreenspace left open deliberately so residents had an open view up to the hills of Highgate & Hampstead.

A green wall on the Christopher Ingold Building is part of @uclnews.bsky.social's Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works. In addition to enhancing the sustainability of the building, this vertical #urbangreenspace brings aesthetic benefits to a rather dreary part of Gordon Street. Win win.

Usually I just see Mr Fox making a late-night dash across the #urbangreenspace at my flat. This time, he lingered.

Across London are a number of surviving cattle troughs. In the mid-1800s, the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain & Cattle Trough Association collaborated with @rspcaoffficial.bsky.social to provide water for horses, cattle & dogs. Today, many are used as planters, providing a spot of #urbangreenspace.

Between the Shard & Guy's Hospital is St Thomas Street Woodland Gardens, an example of @teamlondonbridge.bsky.social's strategy to green the London Bridge area. The low-maintenance #urbangreenspace was designed with its surroundings in mind, incl windy conditions created by nearby tall buildings.

Despite nearly two decades in London, I'm not used to the sight of a padlocked park gate, like at Cartwright Gardens. It's a complex, divisive issue; context is critical. Some cities don't lock #urbangreenspace & some parks are active at night. I'm fascinated by cultural influences on park timing.

Just a few years ago, Alfred Place was a car-heavy rat run off Tottenham Court Road. Now renamed Alfred Place Gardens, it was Camden’s first new #urbangreenspace in the area for 25 years, yet its impacts extend beyond one block.

The #urbangreenspace at Ridgmount Gardens is a narrow strip in Bloomsbury located at a site of former stables. When the stables fell out of use, the space was turned into gardens in 1895. Despite being very publicly visible, the space is for residents only. No key, no access.
