I'm attempting to address this cracked veneer. I'm starting conservative and if that doesn't look good, I'll get a little more aggressive. Messing this veneer up isn't something I can really recover from, so we take this in steps.

Veneer problems! We got cracking, we got warping, we got uh, big cracking The warping should be relatively easy to deal with. The hide glue underneath can be made ductile again with some heat. I've used a heat gun and a block to press it back in place a bit, but a clothes iron might help too

Are there any wood ID people on here? I'm a little mystified at this stuff. I've narrowed the date to 1920s, so it's possible it's some species we don't use any more. It's color is like walnut, but the grain patterns are not. It's not notably hard, somewhere between walnut and maple. #woodworking
