To highlight the significance of this shift? Kurtis Blow was the first emcee signed to a major (Mercury) in 1980. He was the undisputed King Of Rap between 1980 and 1985. He was the first emcee to have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th LP. By 1992, HIS entire back catalog was largely out of print too!

Rap was a single based genre between 1979 and 1985. The first Golden Era coincides with major labels investing in signing acts. The first wave of multiple “classic” Rap albums was between 1986-89. The overwhelming majority of early “classic” Rap albums were out of print by the mid ‘90s! Seriously.

We were two micro generations removed from the 1st Golden Era and we already had Rap fans who never heard JVC Force’s “Doin’ Damage” LP from 1988 & “Force Field” from 1990. Masters Of Ceremony LP “Dynamite”? They never even knew it existed… The industry kept old Rock “alive” for younger fans

Difference is Rock had the protections of the RIAA so it could have its classic albums stay in print. Classic Rock stations were set up early. Hollywood films had Classic Rock soundtracks. “The Big Chill”. “Almost Famous”. “ High Fidelity”. Rap never had that same level of advantages. Still doesn’t.
