Poetry can take you to wonderful places. Last night it took me to Fire & Dust in Coventry in the beautiful Priory Visitors Centre. This morning it is taking me home via Birmingham Coach Station where I have just had to spend 40p to piss.

My book is scared of going out into the world. It thinks everyone is going to find it ridiculous or disgusting. I tried to reassure it by saying no-one is that interested. I feel hollow and distant from myself.

When people say there are too many poems, what they mean is that contemporary poetry is a warehouse of forgotten books whose excitement is in finding a lost treasure, not a knowable terrain which can be surveyed and described by a critic or judge.
