We are having A STORM!

Why should you care? Because oceans regulate climate, influence storm intensities, absorb heat and carbon, are the habitat for wildlife, provide food, and drive weather patterns that impact agriculture, infrastructure, and coastal communities. Losing data weakens our understanding and forecasting.

The network was deployed in 2016 with a lifespan of 25 years, and was designed for long-term monitoring. It tracks the state of the oceans to identify changes in currents, fisheries, or sea levels. Without long-term data, we'll be in the dark. Coastal communities and ocean industries will suffer.

The OOI is like a massive network of weather stations, but for the ocean. Sensors collect real-time data on temperature, currents, carbon, storms, habitats, and sea level. Scientists around the world use these data; no individual lab or nonprofit could build or maintain a system of this scale.
