A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of joining "the Bee’s Knees" podcast, where we talked about our latest research on honeybees and what it means for wild pollinators. 🎙️🐝 You can listen to the episode here:

Pollination Overload: Why More Honey Bees Don't Always Mean Better Crops (Ep. 67) - The Bee's Knees
Can having too many honeybee hives in our landscapes be detrimental? Dr. Ainhoa Magrach led a comprehensive review that brings fresh clarity to a long-standing question: how does the number of honeybee hives in a landscape affect wild pollinators, plant reproduction, and ecosystem health? We explore how the overuse of managed honeybees can sometimes undermine biodiversity and agricultural productivity and discuss sustainable practices that can make a difference.

Honoured (and a bit surprised!) to receive the Aixegetxo award last week. I never feel these things are just about me — they reflect the people, teams and communities I’m lucky to work with. Grateful for all your support. Mila esker. 💙🌿

I’ve never been a runner, but I’ve started lately—and it’s been amazing for clearing my head and managing stress. I’m slow, awkward, and very much a beginner… but I keep showing up. Still a turtle, but a resilient one. 🐢✨

Academics are stuck in a game we always lose. A for-profit publisher offered me $1K a year to edit one of their journals — work worth far more. I said no. We write, review, and edit for free, then pay to publish and read. Time to stop playing the game.

🍯🐝 Honey is tasty, and beekeeping is necessary…but how many honeybee hives do we really need? That’s exactly what we’re trying to figure out. In the meantime… we have honey! 🌿✨

Our new paper shows that high-density honeybee populations alter wild pollinator visitation rates but don’t lead to proportional increases in crop production — highlighting complex impacts on pollination services and ecosystem balance. 🐝🌸🌱
