We started a new tradition of family movie night on Friday. We each take turns picking the movie, but for some reason my wife decided on Mary Poppins tonight, not realizing it is 2.5 hours long.

One of the great joys of the last year has been discovering Michael Roemer’s work. With every new movie, my respect for him as a director and humanist has only increased. A bold, gentle voice. This month I watched his movies on dying (Dying and Pilgrim, Farewell). I’ve never seen anything like it.

What a terrible loss and a tremendously stupid decision by the Tribune.

I know it’s literally just the first half of the first game of the season and we’re down (after a typical dirty Arsenal goal), but Manchester United are looking improved. Good press, quick movement.

It’s only been two episodes but I’m already super curious about what Noah Hawley has planned for future seasons. He spent years developing the show, and you can tell.

I worried that the age of big, ambitious TV shows had passed, but Alien Earth looks to be something special. First two episodes were excellent, with cool world-building, nasty monsters, and an interesting expansion on the movies’ themes.

Houston really is a great city. Sure, it’s laid out like someone played Sim City drunk at 2am, but I just had a delicious West African rice bowl with chicken and plantains followed by cereal milk Oreo ice cream at POST.

So you’re telling me the Wizard of Oz presented itself as a towering force of overwhelming technology, only to be unmasked as just some guy, off-screen?

I guess the vibes were right after all.

I don’t quite get the high praise for the new Fantastic Four. It looks nice and there’s one terrific sequence (space), but otherwise it’s a lot of nothing. No characterization, no real story, and a shockingly dull cast.

There’s a lot of mid stuff in theaters right now, but Sorry, Baby is outstanding. Definitely worth a trip. One of the better directorial debuts I’ve seen in a while.

Everyone’s bringing up Dune, but the best indication of what he might do with the franchise is probably Sicario.

I saw The Phoenician Scheme last night. Not quite as good as Asteroid City, though I absolutely adored that, but maybe his funniest movie in a long time.

Today, The Thing is considered an undisputed classic, but when it was originally released it was considered an artistic and commercial failure.

Officially completed my first consulting gig. A bit sad to be done with it, but I had a great time working with the Carter Center. I learned a lot during these past three months, including how to turn precinct and county-level data into legislative district data.

What a loss. I discovered Roemer’s work only recently, but I was floored by Nothing But a Man. It belongs in the canon of American cinema. I also adored The Plot Against Harry, which surely must have influenced the Coens, and Vengeance Is Mine, a searing drama with an incomparable Brooke Adams.

The new Mission: Impossible might actually be my least favorite of the franchise. Or at least close to the bottom. The first hour is a weird, disjointed mess, and the two standout sequences in the latter half feel disconnected from the narrative. The plotting is too mechanical to truly engage.
