Fantastic piece here; the only things I'd add is to reflect on the gentle, affectionate nature of the satire; & that the accompanying texts (by James T. Callender?) are essential, and contain vast amounts of information and insight about individuals & society just not found anywhere else.

Popped into the Scottish National Gallery to see David Wilkie's fine preparatory drawings for one of my favourite Scottish paintings, 1813's "The Letter of Introduction". Exhibition closes today, as do the Francis Cadell war drawings and Burns in art exhibs.

Absolutely tremendous piece here. "Incidental sound for the transition scenes was provided by the poet Norman MacCaig, who whistled refrains of a variety of the songs.." MacCaig was a teacher back then, but it's other (Norton Park) teachers, Jim Ritchie in particular, who brought this all about.

Two of a group of albumen prints I've acquired with Bunyan/Elstow associations. Internal dating indicates 1874 to 1881. No photographer, but the likelihood is that these are the work of George Downes d. 1879. (1)

I ended up listening to century-old #nightingales in the garden until dusk fell, mingled with the sound of the evening #birds. No words for how beautiful and poignant. (The reverse of this 78 is a recording of dawn birdsong. I guess I should get up early one morning...)

This book of instruction for newly qualified legal clerks in 1727, discovered yesterday by @lixmount.bsky.social at the @signetlibrary.bsky.social has several detailed pages on how to ‘write well’. Anyone who has toiled over a page of Secretary Hand might find it of interest..

I've been to this and it's absolutely tremendous. It's all based on fresh research, and uses a fabulously rich mix of artifacts, art and illustration, books, pamphlets etc. to tell its story. And it's in the beautiful Georgian House in Charlotte Square! Well worth the visit.

I have been taking Polaroids of my garden and the views from it and divided them into seasons - an ongoing project that started a few years ago and here are a few from Winter on the Pennines.
