Hot take: I have more respect for “Old Guard Evangelists” that make their hate boners for young people extremely apparent than I do for “New Guard” Leatherfolk who talk a lot of game up until it’s time to prove that younger community members actually matter.

Watching Leathermen answer a newbie that asks “where does one get affordable gear” with either Mr. S, Northbound, or whatever the hell is so funny to me it’s like calling fucking Rolexes cheap. All the while completely forgetting used exists. But hey the fuck do I know, right?

I do think there’s some truth to “culture favoring youth,” at least in terms of what is aesthetically desirable in culture at large. Otherwise makeup/skincare brands wouldn’t sell shit to make your skin look younger, get rid of wrinkles, etc.

There’s something so fascinating about folks in their late 30s, early 40s being referred to as Leather’s “Next Generation.” If that’s the age where our community considers you an up-and-comer, no wonder I feel like calling myself a Leatherman is setup and punchline.

Damn, everyone I know seems to be joining the IML team. I got contacted back in November of 2024 about potentially playing a role… somehow, they didn’t have something specific in mind for me but I was still reached out to. …I haven’t heard from them since August.

Lukewarm take most likely, but I don’t think we’ll ever see an IML winner even close to Coulter Thomas’s age (23) again. Combination of the new explicit “only compete once” rule, and the fact that I genuinely believe Leather doesn’t take anyone under 30 seriously.
