Pastoral electronica from Derbyshire, UK Posts by Sophie ๐
pinned post!
Hello people new and old. We make pastoral electronica using field recordings, piano and guitar out of a cotton mill studio in Derbyshire. The shows we play sometimes involve turning sound into light. Other interests include books, hills and mushrooms.

@haikusalut.bsky.social
have been regular guests on our different London stages for over a decade. Itโs hard to think of another set of musicians who share the sensibility and ambitions we try to bring to each edition of Daylight Music.

Big thank you to
@moonbuilding.bsky.social
for making our new song 'What About Tomorrow?' track of the week! "swirling appeggios" and "a wonderful repeating, Reich-like piano riff from Meg."

Now I can't say too much, but this has only been announced for three little hours, and I'm reliably informed that tickets are proverbially flying. My closest advisories have also told me who else is to be announced, and it is *legendary* Early birds are here:

We went to the woods and asked a birch tree to join the band. We took tiny recordings of the sap flow, tapped it, thanked it, and drank the sap. Magic!

As a follow up to my post about the humongous lions mane mushroom. It is now entirely dehydrated, and I am about to perform a dual extraction to release compounds that will give my brain superpowers. The next record is gonna be synapsy ๐

I've been spending time inside a sequencer that makes sounds fly around, and attempting to make order of the chaos. I've added a recording of some stuff rolling across a table. I'm not too enamoured with the piano, but it works! The machines are doing my bidding!

This account will get back to field recordings and micro-music soon, but I grew a humongous lions mane mushroom, and it felt like the kind of sidequest that you, the people, may be interested in.

I know a lot of people who didn't get on with this book, but I thought it was fantastic. Is there a genre name for books with no plot? I am all over that shit.

A bit gross, sorry. For the past 2 years I've been keeping a worm farm in the garden. I made a contact mic so we could hear their striations, but disappointingly the recording turned out a bit pants. Does anyone have any suggestions on cheap mic alternatives? I'd like to hear what they have to say!

Can anyone recommend some decent music documentaries? I'm thinking more experimental / neo-classical / jazz rather than lad rock stuff. There's a hole where traitors used to be and I'd like to fill it with GOOD. Thanks!

Yesterday, Gem found out that icicles sound like xylophones. I went back today to activate their tiny wooden sounds. I then put the recording through an arpeggiator & added some grain delay. I'm really happy with the percussiveness of it all. Hope you're all staying warm!

Having read most Murakami in my twenties and not rating his last one, I wondered whether I'd outgrown him, but this one is perfectly Murakami by numbers. It's everything I wanted it to be. Half expected to see a dead unicorn this morning.

I went out today with a little battery powered portable set up. I'm hoping to get out more this year and find some earthy textures to take back to the studio. The music is made out of one small sample of kalimba, e-piano and a recording of a tin watering can. Happy New Year! Sophie

Next year, I'll be making machines make microtonal sounds, mining for tiny sounds in the peak district & combining the two to make patterns to make you feel things. I don't really know what this means yet, but the Arts Council have given me the chance to find out & I'm grabbing it with both hands โค๏ธ

I went to see a band this week who haven't played in 18 yrs. I loved them, and every person I know now, I can trace back to the community around that band. I can pinpoint the exact moment my life took a different course. The gig was great, but I'm nursing some unnameable feelings over here.
