Teaching men to read and write was a mistake.

This is probably the fastest way to make me angry as a reviewer, but the second fastest is to cite an abstract-only DOI; and the third is to cite a shitty, incomplete meta-review paper from an MDPI journal.

On more than one occasion, my entire written feedback on a “reject” decision is just “the authors failed to cite the literature accurately in [1-5] and consequently the paper is insufficiently engaged with the state of the field.” Why would I waste my time reviewing an obviously lazy paper?

If you’re reading this and follow me, I’m really curious what you think my field/specialisation is in. I’ll give you a favourite meme in exchange for a guess.

The night before my PhD defence I checked every paper in my thesis reference list to make sure I could answer questions about their content if needed. Because that was the expectation!

I just can't get past "What do you mean I have to check AAALLLLLLLL my citations?" Like, dude, what? My PhD advisor would have hung me by my toenails on the quad if I didn't know what one of my citations was for.

I’m sorry but if you aren’t sure of a citation, whether what it means or that it exists… why are you citing it. why are you referring to something you haven’t read or don’t understand? that defeats the entire bloody point
