This place is a mess right now. If we want it to be better, we all have to own our share of responsibility for making it better.

Anyone have any advice on how to start up a casual writing hobby and actually stick to it? I've been dabbling a little, but still waiting for that long term hook to settle in.

Anyway, it's a Training Day night. Haven't seen this in close to 15 years, so I'm hoping it's still great.

Tomorrow is the fifth anniversary of January 6 and one of the reasons I'm down on certain things right now is how much did not get done after that day to restore faith in the justice system. How is so much of this still happening after that day?

Not sure how to feel that all it took to break the opening of my next novel was to look at a fast food menu, but the idea hit and really tied the room together. I'm not saying how, but it was a real moment of clarity.

After taking 10 days to think about it, I'm thinking that Chalamt in Marty Supreme might be one of my favorite performances in general. It just has so many wrinkles that I can't stop thinking about. Up there with Phoenix in The Master and The Lighthouse guys for roles that build in my imagination.

A story going on 30+ now, but as a child I shoved a rock up my nose and had to go to the E.R. I wish I had a more ceremonious story, but I haven't been severely injured often.

Proud of my school's men's basketball team winning their first game on Satuday since (checks notes) January 11, 2025. I hope this is the turnaround we've needed for longer than 12 months.

The TV ad for this episode has a line where Bobby says "I'm going to die alone like Weird Al Yankovic." Because I was a kid who didn't know better, I thought the comedian was dead until he began doing late night promotion for "Poodle Hat." Pre-internet life was wild times, I tell you what.

I'm also going to try and see how far into Adventure Time I can get (starting) this year. I think this is my third time trying a proper watch but always give up under 20 eps. With that said, I love what I've seen and Fionna and Cake is awesome. Want to believe this will be the time.

Better late than never. Finally doing my 2025 resolution to do a full rewatch of Atlanta. Maybe it's because it was a Childish Gambino-heavy year, but I finally tipped over into just going for it. Six episodes in and I forgot how good it was from the jump. Really one of the best things FX ever did.

First book of the year is also my first Nick Horby. I'm not too familiar with "About A Boy," and I'm surprised how complex it is for what I assumed was a lighthearted British romance. Has a lot of enjoyable hallmarks, but didn't take mental illness to be so prominent in the narrative.

As I do every year, I try to summarize my feelings on the year that was in one final farewell. This year was about trying to find light in the darkness, and I'm doing my best to keep that spirit alive. My hope is that things get better sooner than later.

There's a lot of reason to celebrate Dick Van Dyke's centennial. He's an amazing, versatile actor and also someone I think is a bit underappreciated with his risk-taking roles. The Comic and Cold Turkey are bold swings of comedy and tragedy that capture how rich his emotional palette is.

Being an English major taught me how to think critically, analyze & question, crucial media literacy skills, how to be an effective communicator (incl how to manage tricky situations and relationships) and obviously how to write well. I think we need more students w/ those skills than working on AI.
