The more I work in wildlife monitoring, the more I realise wildlife moves around & often we have little idea why, when, or how far 🙂 ‘Place-based conservation’ makes much more intuitive sense for plants than animals.

To save Australia’s animals, scientists must count how many are left. But what if they’re getting it wrong?
Wildlife monitoring is vital to arresting Australia’s extinction crisis. But research shows we may be getting false pictures of how species are faring.

Flinders Palaeo colleagues knocking it out of the park with this paper on short-faced kangaroo extinctions. No shortcuts, just lots of specimens, lots of patience & some fancy microscopes. Chipping away at Pleistocene extinction questions a few species at a time🙂

New study challenges a major theory on why some kangaroos mysteriously went extinct
Roughly 40,000 years ago, the short-faced cousins of modern kangaroos died out. The cause has been the subject of fierce debate.
