We are attending #ietf126 in Vienna. The #xmpp community is represented at the Hackathon and we are hosting a side meeting on Thursday at 15:00 (Park Suite 4) to introduce the idea of bringing XMPP 2.0 back to the IETF.

Google is now buying access to source code repositories to train their LLMs. This puts the value of the code they previously stole from the open-source community into a whole new perspective.

What #conversations_im did was prove that the technology works. When #matrix reinvented the wheel as an eventually consistent graph database with a JSON API, they didn't do it because #xmpp didn't work. They did it because their investors were seeking control over the entire stack.

Historically, events like Meta announcing ads in WhatsApp haven’t significantly impacted #conversations_im download numbers. This time feels different. February saw double the installs of a typical month. It seems the sentiment against Big Tech is finally translating into action. #diday #xmpp

If the latest #conversations_im release prompted you to upgrade your #ejabberd (Sorry about that 😔), do yourself a favor: go into the Account Details, select Server Info from the overflow menu, and check if all extensions are enabled. Some need to be explicitly enabled in the configuration file.

Over the years, I’ve fixed numerous security issues in #conversations_im. Whether reported by third parties or flagged internally, all were resolved within 24 hours of discovery. The two most severe issues were both identified during internal reviews.

I consider myself a 0.5x developer because I think twice as long about the potential consequences of my actions.

Every setting has a cost, both in terms of code complexity and the user's ability to understand how an app works. We never introduce a setting for no reason, and occasionally it's good to reevaluate the trade-offs we made.
