A quiet but still chilly weekend lies ahead with cool and dry air entrenched across the area. Sunday morning looks particularly chilly as lows fall into the mid-20s and wind chills drop into the teens. But at least the sun will be out!

Heads up: some slick spots are possible on bridges and overpasses this morning due to freezing fog, particularly along and inland of 17-A. Freezing Fog Advisory goes until 8am. Take it slow!

Sunshine returns as we head into the first full weekend of February, but we've got a few more days of below-normal temperatures before some relief (70s!) arrives next week.

Absolutely, positively gross outside as temperatures have held in the mid-30s for much of the day with high pressure wedging in from the north.

Showers will taper off Thursday morning, leaving a cool and somewhat cloudy day behind. Expect highs only to peak in the mid-to-upper 40s. Cooler-than-normal temperatures prevail this weekend despite much more sunshine, but warming is on tap for next week.

Our last bit of precipitation for a little bit arrives on Wednesday as a cold front approaches the area. Thursday runs cooler before slow warming begins with full sunshine on Friday. And, for a change, the weekend looks quiet and seasonable.

The week ahead: Our run of cooler than normal temperatures that closed January will continue for the first week of February, but a repeat of the past couple weekends of wintry intrigue, mercifully, is not expected.

Per NWS: The low temperature downtown today bottomed out at 22°, breaking a 126-year-old record! The previous record cold February 1st was February 1, 1900, with a low temperature of 23°.

Preliminarily, we start February 2026 off with some record cold: the low of 20° observed a little after 7:30am breaks the record of 21° for February 1 set in 1977.

Good to see relatively quiet roads on a Saturday night, especially as we see what looks like some snow buildup here on Rifle Range Rd. at the Isle of Palms Connector.

As winds begin to tick up, wind chills have started heading down to the extreme cold thresholds. Wind chills have been as low as 5° at Pinopolis, with single digits and low teens further into the metro. Extreme Cold Warning in effect.

We’re not totally done just yet as more snow should move by on the back end of the upper low before it’s all said and done overnight. A few upticks in snow are showing up on radar around St. George and Holly Hill, moving southeastward. See if they hold…

Snow will gradually taper off overnight, though another burst or two of moderate snow is possible through early Sunday morning. From there, attention turns to single-digit wind chills to start February and the risk for black ice Sunday night and Monday morning.

Charleston PD reporting that the Limehouse and Stono bridges to Johns Island have been closed due to icy conditions.

The dry slot coming down the Savannah River is one reason why it appears areas northeast of 26 are going to get their best bang for their snow buck; may see rates taper down into parts of the Tri-County soon as this rotates in.

Some dry slots are rotating in at times, but otherwise many of us continue to see a good bit of snow. As it gets colder, snow-to-liquid ratios will continue to increase with grains transitioning to fluffier flakes (dendrites). Plenty to come!

Snow has largely overtaken the Tri-County area. So far it’s generally light in nature, which is what’s expected to this point. Should see snow continue to fall well into tonight as the upper low traverses the area.

Starting to get more reports of sleet with some snowflakes further west as the leading edge of the precipitation pushes in. A small layer of warm air may exist aloft, but that won’t be around long.

Keep in mind that while some of us (primarily further inland) will only really see snow for the entirety of the event, there may be a changeover from rain to snow closer to the coast. This is priced into the forecast. We’ll be interested to know what’s falling in your neck of the woods today!

Radar is beginning to fill in to our west and south as modeled. Temperatures in Charleston proper are still above freezing, but we are seeing temps at freezing in Moncks Corner and just above in Summerville. Expect things to start to ramp up locally soon.

We may be getting underway in a few spots. There’s a mPING report of snow around St. George, and a couple reports of some ice pellets up around Carnes. Main event won’t get underway until later, still, but it’s not out of the question to see something ahead of it.

Some evidence on radar that some precipitation is trying to get going in Colleton and Dorchester counties. Very light at this point, and could still fall as rain given temperatures above freezing in the Tri-County. Keeping an eye on it.

Snow is being reported around the Columbia area up I-26 toward Greenville this morning. We’ll need to be a bit patient for our turn as the upper low continues to dig southward; still thinking our window for snow opens later this afternoon especially near the coast.

Saturday should be a good day for Lowcountry snow-lovers as a wintry storm system impacts the area. Sunday will feature bitterly cold temperatures, including wind chills in the single digits in the morning, with black ice possible Monday and Tuesday mornings.

After a comparatively warm Friday, a wintry weekend lies ahead as a coastal low affects the area with rain changing to snow on Saturday followed by bitter cold featuring single-digit wind chills on Sunday.

Winter Storm Watch for Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties goes into effect starting Saturday from 7 AM until Sunday at 1 PM.

Temperatures take a small dip Thursday before warming again Friday. Then, the big drop on the temperature rollercoaster hits as a coastal low likely brings some rain and snow to the region for Saturday, setting up an extremely cold start on Sunday.

Below-normal temperatures continue for the foreseeable future, though the rest of the work week won't quite be as cold as Tuesday was, nor will it be as cold as this weekend looks to be. Winter weather chances remain in play for Saturday, with extreme cold possible Sunday.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect as wind chills dip well into the low teens Tuesday morning. Despite full sunshine, highs only peak in the low-to-mid-40s. The edge comes off the cold a bit Wed-Fri, but another shot of cold air awaits for the weekend.

A cold front coming through Monday morning will usher in much colder and drier air, keeping temperatures well below normal for the week ahead as we bid adieu to January.
