Hey #AcademicSky has anyone assigned a video game for a course? There are lots of ways this could go badly, console exclusives are out. But is buying a $5-70 game more of an ask than a $5-500 textbook? I've had students write EXCELLENT papers on video games, and am tempted to assign one. Thoughts?

I have students do a lot of reflection writing and explain what grade they think they deserve, based on the criteria, in the class. At some point I want to try establishing success metrics with students. I want them to think about work vs product in evaluation. #UngradingChat

#UngradingChat Q3: What challenges have you experienced with alternative grading paradigms? How did you solve them? Or where do you need help? It's my first semester w. labor-based grading, so day to day focus on the new way of thinking, esp. when pressed for time, is the big thing right now.

#UngradingChat Q2. The only thing I've done so far, since this is my first semester giving it a go, is a kind of contract grading: the Guaranteed B in my comp. So far, it is going well. (I'll really know once students complete the course.) Next term, I'm trying it in a lit class, too.

My grading philosophy is that I'm just starting out with ungrading in classes this semester, and I'm learning a lot and excited to learn more. I'm also going to add it to a non-composition class for the first time next semester! #UngradingChat

This is our Christmas tree. Note the few ornaments near the top. This is our newest cats’s first Christmas. He already managed to get a couple ornaments off. I kinda miss our ornaments, but it is a riot to watch him play with our other tree-loving cat under it.
