While I’m with those who believe a better time for a burst of new energy and commitments seems like the Spring Equinox… … the fact remains our collective calendars do turn new today. And there’s something I love SO much about that clean, new, fresh 1-1… in front of a new year: 2026.

As hard and chaotic and trying as 2025 has been for us, I’m grateful for one thing especially: this year was a continued unveiling. Over the past decade or so, I’ve noticed more and deeper apocalypse happening. Not that apocalypse, the one far-too-many “Christians” are obsessed with right now.

The Winter Solstice — the longest night and shortest day of the year — is today, and I'm thinking about darkness. I'm thinking about how our dominant culture tends to speak disparagingly about, and even fear, darkness.

When I got sick, my people showed up. So many signed up for our Meal Train — many providing multiple meals for us throughout the course of my treatments. I also asked for volunteers to go on walks with me, to keep me both active and connected. A number of people chose that one.

These things often dawn on you slowly. At first, on Wednesday morning, I saw an alert come through on Nextdoor, about an active shooter situation nearby. Odd. Unusual. False alarm? Sometimes those happen. Surely that was it.

In my more-than-a-decade-and-a-half of professional fundraising, I’ve lost count of the number of people who have told me that fundraising feels “yucky” to them. I’ve heard many different reasons why.

Friends, we don’t need to do more. So many of us are stuck in a feedback loop, one where we constantly feel like we are not-enough… so we feel like we need to do more… in order to be enough… or at least acceptable… or even just OK. Our entire foundation is thus insecure.

This post is a throwback to one of our most popular essays on Substack (linked below): "Weaving the Fabric Back Together." We wrote this right after the 2024 U.S. presidential election, when the outcome seriously threatened everything we who do community work stand for.
